Commanding officer killed in Boko Haram attack on military base
A commanding officer has reportedly been shot dead after insurgents linked to Boko Haram launched an attack on another military base in northeastern Nigeria. The assault is said to have occurred during a coordinated raid on a military facility where troops were stationed to combat insurgency in the region.
Security sources disclosed that the militants stormed the base in the early hours, engaging soldiers in a fierce gun battle. During the confrontation, the commanding officer leading the troops was fatally shot while attempting to repel the attackers. Other soldiers were reportedly injured as the insurgents attempted to overrun the facility.
The affected base is located in an area that has witnessed repeated attacks by insurgent groups operating in the North-East, particularly in parts of Borno State. The region has remained a focal point of Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operations for over a decade.
Military reinforcements were later deployed to the area, forcing the attackers to retreat after intense exchanges of gunfire. Security authorities said efforts are ongoing to track the fleeing militants and prevent further attacks on military formations and nearby communities.
The latest incident highlights the persistent security challenges facing the Nigerian military in its fight against insurgency. Analysts say continued attacks on military bases demonstrate the evolving tactics of extremist groups as security forces intensify operations across the North-East.
