Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has dismissed a recent court ruling that reportedly barred him from seeking a second term in office, describing the decision as premature and unnecessary. The governor stated that the ruling does not affect his constitutional right to contest in the upcoming governorship election in the state.
The controversy followed a judgment delivered by a Federal High Court which allegedly questioned Aiyedatiwa’s eligibility to seek another term as governor. Reacting to the development, the governor maintained that the legal action was based on issues that had not yet matured and therefore should not have been entertained by the court at this stage.
Speaking through his aides, Aiyedatiwa insisted that the matter was still subject to further legal interpretation and that the ruling would be challenged through the appropriate judicial process. According to him, the case does not represent the final position of the law regarding his eligibility to participate in the next governorship election.
The governor also expressed confidence in the Nigerian judiciary, stating that higher courts would properly review the issues raised in the ruling. He noted that legal experts within his team are already examining the judgment and preparing the necessary steps to appeal the decision.
Aiyedatiwa emphasized that his administration remains focused on governance and development in Ondo State despite the legal controversy. He reassured supporters and party members that the court decision would not distract his government from ongoing projects and policy initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, economic growth and social welfare in the state.
Political observers say the case could become a significant legal battle ahead of the next governorship election in Ondo State. Analysts note that disputes surrounding eligibility and tenure often generate intense debate within Nigeria’s political landscape, especially when incumbent leaders seek to remain in office.
Meanwhile, members of Aiyedatiwa’s political camp have urged supporters to remain calm, stressing that the governor retains the right to explore all legal options available to him. They argue that the matter should ultimately be resolved through established judicial channels rather than public speculation.
As the legal process unfolds, the situation is expected to attract continued attention from political stakeholders, legal experts and residents of Ondo State, many of whom are closely monitoring developments surrounding the governor’s second term ambitions.
