Fagbemi Says Delay in Ambassadorial Postings Is Causing Embarrassment for Nigeria
Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has expressed concern over the prolonged delay in the appointment and posting of Nigerian ambassadors to foreign missions, warning that the situation is causing significant embarrassment for the country on the international stage.
Fagbemi made the remarks while addressing issues surrounding Nigeria’s diplomatic representation abroad, noting that the absence of substantive ambassadors in several countries has weakened the country’s diplomatic presence. According to him, many Nigerian embassies and high commissions have been operating without officially appointed ambassadors for an extended period, a development that has raised concerns among foreign governments and international partners.
The attorney-general explained that diplomatic missions play a vital role in promoting national interests, strengthening bilateral relations and representing Nigeria in global discussions. Without appointed ambassadors leading these missions, he said, it becomes difficult for the country to maintain the level of diplomatic engagement expected of a major African nation.
Nigeria recalled its ambassadors in 2023 for consultations and has yet to announce a comprehensive list of new ambassadorial nominees. Since then, many foreign missions have been managed by chargé d’affaires and senior diplomats acting in temporary capacities. While these officials continue to perform essential duties, analysts say the absence of substantive ambassadors has limited Nigeria’s influence in certain diplomatic negotiations and international forums.
Fagbemi stressed that resolving the issue of ambassadorial postings should be treated as a national priority. He noted that diplomatic representation is not only symbolic but also strategic, particularly for economic diplomacy, international trade promotion and security cooperation.
Observers have also warned that prolonged delays in appointing ambassadors could affect Nigeria’s image and credibility in global diplomacy. Countries typically rely on ambassadors to maintain high-level communication between governments, coordinate bilateral agreements and facilitate cooperation on international issues.
Despite the concerns, officials within the federal government have indicated that the process of selecting and screening potential ambassadors is ongoing. Once nominations are finalized, they are expected to be forwarded to the National Assembly for confirmation in line with constitutional requirements.
Political analysts say the eventual announcement of ambassadorial nominees will be closely watched, as the appointments are expected to reflect Nigeria’s diplomatic priorities and strategic partnerships across different regions of the world.
