Drone Attack Hits US Embassy in Iraq as UAE Reopens Airspace Amid Iran Missile Threats
A major drone and rocket attack struck the United States embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, as tensions in the Middle East continued to escalate following missile and drone threats linked to Iran. The incident occurred shortly after the United Arab Emirates reopened its airspace, which had been temporarily closed due to regional security concerns.
According to security sources, several drones and rockets were launched toward the heavily fortified diplomatic compound located in Baghdad’s Green Zone. Iraqi security officials reported that at least five drones were involved in the assault. Air defense systems installed at the embassy managed to intercept some of the incoming drones, but one reportedly struck inside the compound, causing fire and smoke. Explosions were also heard across parts of the Iraqi capital during the attack.
The strike is believed to be one of the most intense attacks targeting the embassy since the outbreak of the current regional conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Analysts say Iranian-backed militias operating in Iraq have increasingly targeted American facilities in retaliation for military strikes against Iranian infrastructure and allied forces in the region.
The attack coincided with heightened security measures across the Gulf. Earlier, the United Arab Emirates temporarily closed its airspace after detecting missile and drone threats believed to be launched from Iran. Authorities described the closure as a precautionary move to ensure aviation safety while defense systems responded to the incoming threats. Flights were briefly suspended or rerouted across the region before airspace operations were gradually restored.
Regional tensions have intensified in recent weeks following large-scale Israeli airstrikes targeting sites in Tehran and Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks across the Middle East, targeting military installations, energy facilities, and infrastructure in several countries. The widening conflict has also disrupted oil shipping routes and raised global concerns about energy supplies and economic stability.
Security forces in Baghdad have increased patrols around government buildings and diplomatic missions following the attack. Iraqi authorities also reportedly tightened security in the Green Zone, which houses several embassies and key government institutions.
As the crisis deepens, governments across the region remain on high alert while international leaders continue diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation of the conflict.
