Lagos State denies involvement in FESTAC Town demolitions

The Lagos State Government has officially denied any involvement in the recent demolition of buildings on Sixth Avenue, FESTAC Town, clarifying that the state did not authorize or carry out the operation. Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, stated at Alausa that reports implicating the state are false. He emphasized that the state adheres to a strict, lawful process before demolishing any structure—including serving notices and involving affected parties.

Dr. Olumide urged all agencies, especially those at the federal level, to consult and obtain clearance from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development before taking any demolition action within Lagos State. He reassured residents that any demolition carried out without proper authorization does not represent his administration’s stance.

Eyewitness accounts and media reports, however, describe that over 15 buildings were destroyed over a weekend on Sixth Avenue in FESTAC. Bulldozers branded with government insignia were seen in operation, leading many traders and shop owners to believe the state government was responsible. Some residents contest the justification for the demolitions, noting that many structures appeared to align with roads or setback requirements, raising questions about the claims of “encroachment.”

The controversy comes amid broader tensions over property rights, legality, and authority. Residents have also secured a court injunction restraining the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and the Lagos State Building Control Agency from further demolitions in parts of FESTAC Town, particularly at 6th Avenue, pending compliance with legal protocols.
