Court Approval Needed for El-Rufai’s Burial Trip, Says Deji Adeyanju
A Nigerian lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has stated that any decision by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to allow former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to attend his mother’s burial should be supported by a valid court order.
Adeyanju made this position clear while reacting to reports that the anti-corruption agency might grant El-Rufai permission to travel for the burial. He stressed that such a move must strictly follow legal procedures, especially if there are existing restrictions tied to investigations or legal proceedings involving the former governor.
He explained that law enforcement agencies do not have the sole authority to override judicial conditions, particularly in cases where a suspect or person of interest is bound by court-imposed limitations. According to him, obtaining a court order would ensure transparency, uphold the rule of law, and prevent any form of procedural violation.
The lawyer further noted that allowing such travel without judicial backing could set a dangerous precedent, potentially weakening public confidence in the justice system. He argued that adherence to due process is essential, regardless of the individual involved or the circumstances surrounding the request.
The situation has sparked public debate, with many Nigerians expressing mixed reactions over the balance between compassion for personal loss and strict compliance with legal frameworks. While some believe humanitarian considerations should be taken into account, others insist that the law must be applied consistently without exceptions.
The development comes amid ongoing scrutiny of public officials and increased calls for accountability within Nigeria’s legal and anti-corruption systems. Observers say the final decision on the matter will likely reflect broader efforts to maintain institutional integrity and public trust.
