M.I Abaga says Nigeria best place to raise children
Nigerian rapper and music executive M.I Abaga recently shared why he prefers the idea of raising his future children in Nigeria, despite the attraction some people have to raising kids abroad. He said the country’s strong sense of family and community are key reasons he feels Nigeria offers something special for parenting.
In an interview, M.I explained that in Nigeria, parenting is often supported by extended family, neighbours, and friends who are ready to help. He contrasted this with countries where long work hours and more individual lifestyles make it harder for parents to get support. He said though raising children abroad offers exposure, it often lacks the communal backbone that gives children a strong grounding early in life.
M.I also spoke about the importance of cultural roots. He believes children raised in Nigeria can grow up knowing where they come from, learning values and identity from home before being exposed to the wider world. He suggested a blended approach—spend early years in Nigeria, then perhaps travel or live abroad later for education or work—but always with a foundation built at home.
While he acknowledged the challenges that come with living in Nigeria—such as infrastructural issues and sometimes unpredictability—M.I emphasized that emotional support, cultural identity, and community care are things money can’t buy. He feels those elements will help children develop empathy, resilience, and a strong sense of who they are.
