Opposition Parties Unite, Plan Single Presidential Candidate for 2027 Election
Leaders of opposition parties in Nigeria have agreed to work towards presenting a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, in a move aimed at strengthening their chances against the ruling party.
The decision was reached during a national summit of opposition figures held in Ibadan, where representatives from major parties gathered to discuss a unified political strategy ahead of the next election cycle.
According to a communiqué issued after the meeting, the parties resolved to collaborate and agree on one candidate who will be supported across all participating opposition platforms. The move is seen as a strategic effort to avoid fragmentation of votes, which has previously weakened the opposition in national elections.
Prominent political figures present at the meeting included Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola, among others. Their participation highlights a growing effort to build a broad coalition capable of challenging the dominance of the ruling party.
Opposition leaders said the plan is driven by concerns about Nigeria’s political direction, including fears of a shrinking democratic space and the need to offer a credible alternative to voters. They emphasized that unity among opposition parties is critical to achieving electoral success in 2027.
Analysts believe the strategy could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape if successfully implemented. However, they also note that reaching consensus on a single candidate may prove challenging, given differing interests and ambitions within the coalition.
The 2027 general election is expected to be highly competitive, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu likely to seek re-election under the ruling party.
Observers say the success of the opposition’s plan will depend on sustained cooperation, clear policy direction, and the ability to maintain unity as the election approaches.
