Cristiano Ronaldo becomes all-time top World Cup qualifying scorer
Cristiano Ronaldo has set a new milestone in international football by becoming the all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The 40-year-old Portuguese forward achieved this feat on October 14, 2025, during Portugal’s 2–2 draw against Hungary in Lisbon. Ronaldo scored both of Portugal’s goals, bringing his total to 41 World Cup qualifying goals, surpassing the previous record of 39 held by Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz.
Ronaldo’s first goal came in the 22nd minute, equalizing for Portugal after Hungary had taken an early lead. He added another before halftime, giving Portugal a 2–1 advantage. Despite their efforts, Portugal conceded a late equalizer in stoppage time, resulting in a draw that leaves them atop Group F with 10 points from four matches.
This achievement adds to Ronaldo’s illustrious career, which includes over 140 international goals. He continues to defy age, maintaining his position as one of the most prolific goal scorers in football history
