Empty gas tanker falls on Lagos road
An empty gas tanker fell and blocked Ibeju Bridge along the Epe Expressway in Lagos, causing major traffic gridlock. According to reports, no casualties were recorded in the incident, but travelers were stranded and parts of the road were effectively impassable. Authorities said the tanker was empty at the time of collapse, reducing the risk of explosion or spillage.
Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) confirmed they have set traffic diversions to ease the congestion. Motorists coming from Inner Epe, Marina, Oko Orisan heading toward Lagos Island are being rerouted via Oke-Osho, Tokin, Agbowa, Imota, and Ikorodu Road. Those traveling from Lekki, Ajah, or Victoria Island toward Epe are being redirected via Ikorodu and Tokin before reconnecting to the expressway. During the diversion, traffic has remained heavy but moving.
Efforts are underway to remove the tanker and restore normal flow. LASTMA said they are awaiting a crane from the vehicle owner to lift the tanker. Emergency response teams and relevant agencies are on the scene supervising the evacuation. Meanwhile, citizens have been urged to remain patient, observe safety guidelines, and cooperate with officers on the ground.
The fall highlights continuing risks on major roads when heavy vehicles experience structural or balance issues, especially on bridges and elevated routes. It also underscores the importance of prompt emergency response, especially for large obstructions affecting transport arteries in a densely populated city like Lagos.
