Osun Pre-Election Violence: IGP Alleges Suspects Are Hiding in Government House After Meeting Adeleke
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has met with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke following the recent outbreak of violence linked to the state’s forthcoming elections, alleging that some individuals wanted in connection with the unrest are currently hiding inside the Osun State Government House.
The meeting was held as security agencies intensified efforts to restore calm across parts of the state after a series of violent incidents that heightened political tensions ahead of the elections. According to the IGP, the discussions with Governor Adeleke focused on improving security, preventing further clashes and ensuring that those responsible for the violence are brought to justice.
Speaking after the meeting, the police chief said intelligence gathered during ongoing investigations indicated that several suspects allegedly involved in the pre-election violence had taken refuge within the Government House. He stressed that the police would continue to pursue all lawful means to apprehend those linked to criminal activities, regardless of their status or political affiliation.
The IGP maintained that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to conducting a professional and impartial investigation into the incidents. He noted that officers had already arrested several suspects and that investigations were continuing to identify other individuals believed to have participated in attacks, destruction of property and acts capable of disrupting public peace.
He appealed to Governor Adeleke and other political leaders in the state to support law enforcement agencies by encouraging anyone with useful information to cooperate with investigators. According to him, the fight against political violence requires collaboration between security agencies, government officials, political parties and members of the public.
Governor Adeleke, during the meeting, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property across Osun State. He assured the police hierarchy that his government would continue to cooperate with security agencies to ensure credible and peaceful elections.
The governor also called on political stakeholders to caution their supporters against engaging in violence or any activities capable of undermining the democratic process. He stressed that differences arising from political competition should be resolved through lawful and peaceful means rather than confrontation.
The allegations concerning suspects allegedly hiding in the Government House have generated widespread public attention and political reactions. While the police insist that investigations are ongoing, observers say the claims are likely to intensify the already charged political atmosphere in the state ahead of the polls.
Security has since been strengthened in several parts of Osun, with additional police personnel deployed to areas identified as potential flashpoints. Authorities have assured residents that adequate measures are in place to safeguard voters, election officials and electoral materials during the electoral process.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated that it would remain neutral throughout the elections and would not tolerate intimidation, thuggery or any attempt to disrupt the democratic exercise. The IGP warned that anyone found violating the law would face prosecution irrespective of political affiliation or social status.
As preparations for the elections continue, residents and political actors have been urged to maintain peace and allow security agencies to carry out their constitutional responsibilities. The police say investigations into the recent violence remain active and that additional arrests could be made as more evidence emerges.
The meeting between the IGP and Governor Adeleke underscores ongoing efforts to address rising political tensions in Osun State and reassure the public that security agencies are determined to ensure a peaceful, free and credible electoral process. Authorities have expressed confidence that with sustained cooperation from all stakeholders, the state can conduct its elections without further violence or disruption.
