Wike Defends Gbajabiamila, Says PFIPC Allegations Are a Political Smear Campaign
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, against allegations linked to the ongoing controversy surrounding the Presidential Food Initiative Project Committee (PFIPC), describing the claims as nothing more than a political smear campaign.
Wike made his position known amid growing public debate over calls for an investigation into the PFIPC. The controversy has drawn reactions from opposition politicians, civil society groups and members of the National Assembly, with some demanding an independent inquiry into the project. However, the FCT minister insisted that the allegations being circulated against Gbajabiamila lack credible evidence and are aimed at damaging his reputation.
According to Wike, political actors should avoid making serious accusations without presenting verifiable facts. He argued that public officials deserve fair treatment and should not be subjected to media trials based on speculation or politically motivated claims.
The minister maintained that Gbajabiamila has served Nigeria in various leadership positions and has built a reputation through years of public service. He said attempts to associate the Chief of Staff with wrongdoing without concrete proof amount to character assassination designed to create unnecessary controversy within the current administration.
The PFIPC has recently become the subject of political debate following demands by opposition figures and some stakeholders for a comprehensive investigation into its activities. Critics have argued that a transparent inquiry is necessary to address public concerns and strengthen confidence in government institutions.
However, Wike questioned the motives behind the persistent allegations, suggesting that some individuals were more interested in scoring political points than uncovering the truth. He urged Nigerians to distinguish between legitimate demands for accountability and campaigns intended to tarnish the image of government officials.
The FCT minister also called on the public to allow relevant institutions to carry out their constitutional responsibilities without undue pressure. According to him, allegations of misconduct should always be investigated through established legal processes rather than through public accusations or media speculation.
Wike further stressed that the administration remains committed to transparency and accountability, adding that no official should be condemned without a proper investigation. He emphasized that due process is essential in maintaining public confidence in governance and ensuring that justice is served fairly.
His remarks come as political parties continue to exchange accusations over the PFIPC controversy. While some opposition leaders have insisted on the establishment of an independent investigative panel, supporters of the government argue that existing institutions are capable of handling any legitimate concerns through constitutional procedures.
Political observers believe the latest comments from Wike have added another dimension to the debate, particularly because of his prominent role within the current administration. Analysts say his public defence of Gbajabiamila reflects the government’s determination to counter allegations it considers politically driven.
Meanwhile, reactions to Wike’s comments have remained mixed across the political landscape. Supporters of the minister argue that allegations should be backed by credible evidence before they are presented as facts, while critics maintain that only a transparent investigation can resolve the controversy and restore public confidence.
Civil society organizations have also continued to advocate for accountability, urging all parties to avoid inflammatory rhetoric and allow any investigation to proceed without interference. They insist that transparency remains essential in promoting good governance and strengthening public trust in democratic institutions.
As discussions over the PFIPC continue, attention is expected to remain on the actions of relevant authorities and the responses of political leaders. Whether the controversy results in a formal investigation or gradually subsides, the debate has once again highlighted the importance of due process, institutional credibility and responsible political discourse in Nigeria.
