Senate Warns Makinde Against UN Appeal, Praises Security Agencies for Oyo Pupils’ Rescue
The Senate has cautioned Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his call for the United Nations (UN) to scrutinise the abduction and rescue of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, while commending Nigerian security agencies for successfully securing the victims’ freedom after 56 days in captivity.
The upper legislative chamber expressed concern that calls for international intervention could undermine the efforts of Nigeria’s security institutions, which it said demonstrated professionalism and resilience in rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers without paying ransom.
The Senate’s position followed Governor Makinde’s recent appeal for a United Nations-backed review of the circumstances surrounding the abduction and rescue operation. The governor had argued that Nigerians deserved a full and transparent account of the 56-day ordeal to strengthen public confidence and improve the security of schools across the country.
Reacting to the governor’s remarks, senators maintained that while transparency is important, Nigeria possesses capable institutions that can investigate security-related incidents without the involvement of international organisations. They urged political leaders to avoid actions that could diminish public confidence in the country’s security architecture.
Lawmakers praised the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and other intelligence agencies for their coordinated efforts in rescuing the victims. They described the operation as a major achievement that reflected the growing effectiveness of intelligence-led security operations against criminal groups.
According to the Senate, the successful rescue demonstrated the importance of collaboration among security agencies and highlighted the value of sustained intelligence gathering in combating kidnapping and other violent crimes. Members stressed that the operation should serve as an encouragement for security personnel who continue to risk their lives in defence of the country.
The lawmakers also expressed sympathy to the rescued pupils, teachers and their families, acknowledging the physical and emotional trauma they endured during their weeks in captivity. They called for continued medical care, psychological counselling and rehabilitation support to help the victims recover fully from the experience.
The abduction of the pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area had generated nationwide concern after armed men attacked schools and took dozens of students and staff into the forest. The victims were eventually rescued after spending 56 days in captivity, with security agencies stating that the operation was driven by intelligence and sustained pressure on the abductors.
The Senate urged the Federal Government and state governments to strengthen security around schools by improving surveillance, deploying additional security personnel where necessary and expanding intelligence-sharing networks with local communities. It noted that protecting educational institutions remains essential to safeguarding the future of Nigerian children.
Security analysts have welcomed the Senate’s commendation of the security forces, saying recognition of successful operations can boost the morale of personnel engaged in difficult assignments across the country. At the same time, they stressed the need to continue investing in modern equipment, intelligence capabilities and personnel welfare to sustain progress in the fight against kidnapping and terrorism.
Political observers believe the differing views between the Senate and Governor Makinde reflect broader debates over accountability, transparency and the appropriate mechanisms for reviewing major security incidents. While some support independent scrutiny to strengthen public trust, others argue that existing national institutions should be allowed to carry out such responsibilities.
As discussions continue, the Senate reiterated its confidence in Nigeria’s security agencies and urged citizens to support ongoing efforts to combat insecurity by providing useful information to law enforcement authorities. It also encouraged all stakeholders to work together in ensuring that schools remain safe learning environments for pupils and teachers across the country.
The successful rescue of the Oyo pupils has been widely celebrated as a significant victory against criminal elements. However, lawmakers emphasized that sustained vigilance, improved intelligence operations and stronger security measures will be necessary to prevent similar incidents and protect lives in the future.
