WAFCON: Nnadozie Vows Super Falcons Will Bounce Back After Malawi Loss
Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has broken her silence following Nigeria’s shocking 3-2 defeat to Malawi at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), insisting the reigning champions remain united and determined to revive their title defence despite the painful setback.
The Brighton & Hove Albion shot-stopper took to her official social media account on Thursday, two days after the Super Falcons suffered one of the biggest upsets in WAFCON history at the hands of tournament debutants Malawi in their Group C opener in Rabat, Morocco. Nnadozie’s errors were widely identified as contributing factors in the defeat, with the goalkeeper coming under heavy criticism from fans and pundits alike.
In her message, the 25-year-old acknowledged the pain of the result but stressed that the team took collective responsibility rather than placing blame on any single player. She described the loss as one that stung deeply but noted the squad’s fighting spirit throughout the contest, adding that the team would draw strength from the setback rather than allow it to define their campaign.
Nigeria’s head coach, Justine Madugu, also moved swiftly to defend his goalkeeper following the criticism directed at her. He maintained that Nnadozie remains a top-class shot-stopper and insisted the defeat reflected a collective off-day rather than the fault of one individual. Madugu said the technical crew had already identified the specific areas the team needs to work on and expressed confidence that the squad possesses the quality, character, and experience needed to recover.
The defeat, inspired by a standout performance from Malawi’s Chawinga sisters, marked Nigeria’s first-ever loss to a tournament debutant at the WAFCON finals. Temwa Chawinga scored twice while her sister and team captain, Tabitha Chawinga, added another as the Scorchers secured a famous win in their maiden appearance at the tournament. Nigeria’s late fightback, through goals from captain Rasheedat Ajibade and substitute Uchenna Kanu, proved insufficient to salvage a result.
Beyond Nnadozie, other members of the Super Falcons squad have also spoken out in support of the team’s ability to bounce back. Midfielder Christy Ucheibe described the outcome as one of football’s realities, while forward Esther Okoronkwo called for calm and reaffirmed the team’s unity heading into their next fixture. Former Super Falcons captain Desire Oparanozie also weighed in, pointing to the goalkeeping errors as a turning point in the match but expressing continued belief in the team’s capacity to recover.
Nigeria Football Federation Executive Committee member Aisha Falode has also thrown her support behind the team, urging Nigerians to stay behind the Super Falcons as they look to bounce back and continue pursuing both WAFCON glory and qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Super Falcons will now turn their attention to a crucial Group C showdown against Zambia on August 1, a fixture widely regarded as a must-win encounter if Nigeria are to keep alive their hopes of a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.
