Arsenal Sign Bruno Guimaraes From Newcastle in £75m Deal
Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United in a deal worth £75 million, strengthening their squad with one of the Premier League’s most experienced midfielders.
The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract with Arsenal, with an option for an additional year. His arrival represents a major statement from the Premier League champions as they continue to build a squad capable of competing for domestic and European honours.
Guimaraes joins Arsenal after more than four years at Newcastle, where he quickly became one of the club’s most important players. He arrived at St James’ Park from French side Lyon in January 2022 and went on to make 195 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 31 goals. He was also appointed club captain and played a key role in Newcastle’s success during his time at the club.
His most significant achievement with Newcastle came when he helped the club win the Carabao Cup, their first major trophy since 1955. His performances and leadership made him a popular figure among Newcastle supporters, making his departure a difficult decision for the club.
Newcastle’s sporting director Ross Wilson confirmed that the club did not initially intend to sell their captain. According to Wilson, Guimaraes made it clear that he wanted a new challenge, forcing Newcastle to consider an agreement despite their preference to retain him.
Arsenal eventually reached a compromise with Newcastle over the transfer fee after negotiations between the two clubs. The Gunners had initially been reluctant to meet Newcastle’s valuation, while the Magpies had wanted a higher figure for their captain. The final agreement was reached at £75 million.
Guimaraes has also explained his decision to move to North London, saying he felt he needed a new challenge. The midfielder expressed excitement about joining Arsenal and said he wants to compete for more trophies with the club.
The Brazilian’s arrival gives Arsenal another high-level option in midfield. He joins a group that includes Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino, providing manager Matthias Jaissle with greater depth and tactical flexibility.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta praised Guimaraes for his versatility, competitive mentality and ability to influence matches. The club believes his experience in the Premier League will allow him to adapt quickly and contribute immediately.
The transfer is also significant because Guimaraes was previously linked with Arsenal before eventually moving to Newcastle. His long-standing reputation as an aggressive, technically gifted and hard-working midfielder made him an attractive target for the Gunners.
For Newcastle, however, his departure represents another major change. The club has already experienced significant turnover involving key players and staff, making Guimaraes’ exit another important development during the summer transfer window.
With the deal now completed, attention will turn to how Guimaraes fits into Arsenal’s midfield and how quickly he can establish himself as an important player for the reigning Premier League champions.
His move marks one of the biggest transfers of the summer and further demonstrates Arsenal’s ambition as they prepare for another season of competition at the highest level.
