Osun State Election Results Across 30 LGAs Still Being Counted
Vote counting is underway across Osun State’s 30 local government areas following Saturday’s closely watched governorship election, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) gradually uploading polling unit-level results to its public viewing portal as collation continues into the evening.
As of the latest checks on the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV), accessible at inecelectionresults.ng, roughly 400 of the state’s 3,763 polling unit results had been uploaded, representing just over 10 percent of the total expected. INEC introduced the portal to allow voters, civil society observers, and other stakeholders to view scanned images of official result sheets from individual polling units in near real time, though the commission has stressed the platform serves as a verification tool alongside, not a replacement for, the formal declaration of results by returning officers.
Saturday’s election drew 2,339,233 registered voters across 3,763 polling units and pitted incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party against APC candidate Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO, and Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), among 14 total candidates on the ballot. INEC reported that 94.5 percent of polling units had opened by 8:30 a.m., with both Registration Area Centre activation and polling unit opening described as peaceful, orderly, and timely.
Voting proceeded largely without major disruption through the day, though isolated reports emerged of BVAS accreditation delays and late-arriving officials at some polling units, prompting frustration among voters in certain areas who described long waits stretching from early morning. Sorting and counting of ballots had begun at several polling units, including in Ilesa West and Ede South, by mid-afternoon, with the process expected to continue into the evening as ward-level and LGA-level collation gets underway.
Both leading camps expressed confidence throughout the day. Accord deputy governorship candidate Kola Adewusi voiced optimism about his party’s chances after casting his vote, while APC’s Oyebamiji, after voting alongside his wife in Ikire, commended the turnout and the conduct of INEC and security personnel, describing the process as peaceful in his assessment. ADC’s Salaam also expressed confidence in his party’s prospects after casting his ballot in Ejigbo, though he raised concerns that some of his party’s agents had not received accreditation tags despite submitting the required details to INEC.
With the 2022 election that first brought Adeleke to power decided by a narrow margin before being contested in court, and Osun regarded as the last off-cycle governorship election before Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, both major camps and observers are watching the outcome closely. Analysts have pointed to vote-rich LGAs such as Osogbo, which alone accounts for over 7 percent of the state’s electorate, as likely to play an outsized role in determining the final result.
Full, verified results across all 30 LGAs are expected to be announced by INEC’s returning officer once collation is complete, likely in the hours ahead.
