Tosin Adeyemi Deepens Ebo Narrative With Acting Finesse
Nollywood actress Tosin Adeyemi is drawing attention with her performance in the Nigerian film Osamede, where she brings added depth to the story through her acting finesse. The historical epic explores the rich culture, mythology and struggles surrounding the Benin Kingdom.
Osamede is a Nigerian historical fantasy drama directed by James Omokwe and produced by Lilian Olubi. The film was adapted from the stage production Osamede: For Kingdom and Country. It features a cast that includes Ivie Okujaye Egboh, Lexan Aisosa Peters, William Benson, Tosin Adeyemi, Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen and Alexander Bud.
The film is set against the backdrop of the 1897 British invasion of the Benin Kingdom. Its story follows Osamede, a young orphan who discovers that she has extraordinary powers linked to the Aruosa stone. The object is deeply connected to Benin mythology and is believed to carry divine significance.
Tosin Adeyemi’s performance adds another layer to the narrative. Her ability to communicate emotion and character through subtle expressions helps strengthen the film’s dramatic moments. Her performance also complements the broader cultural focus of the production.
One of the major strengths of Osamede is its commitment to indigenous storytelling. Much of the film is delivered in the Edo language, allowing the production to preserve the cultural identity at the heart of the story. Reports on the production noted that only a small portion of the dialogue is in English.
The filmmakers also invested heavily in recreating the world of the Benin Kingdom. Sets were constructed from scratch, while production took place in locations in Edo State. The team worked with Benin historians to ensure that the visual world reflected the historical and cultural setting of the story.
For Adeyemi, the project provides an opportunity to showcase her range beyond conventional Nollywood roles. Her involvement in a culturally driven production also highlights the growing interest in Nigerian stories that draw from indigenous history and mythology.
The actress is not new to major Nigerian film productions. She was also part of the cast of House of Ga’a, the 2024 historical drama directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters. In that film, she played Zeinab alongside actors including Femi Branch, Mike Afolarin, Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham and Lateef Adedimeji.
Adeyemi also appeared in Tòkunbò, the 2024 Nigerian action drama directed by Ramsey Nouah. The film was released on Netflix and featured Gideon Okeke, Chidi Mokeme and Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi among its cast.
Her growing presence in films across different genres points to an actress building a diverse body of work. From historical dramas to action stories, Adeyemi continues to take on roles that require different approaches to character development.
Osamede itself has attracted attention beyond Nigeria. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Market in May 2025 before its Nigerian premiere later that year. It also went on to win Best Narrative Feature at the Silicon Valley African Film Festival.
The film’s combination of mythology, history and indigenous language gives its cast an unusual platform to explore characters rooted in Nigerian culture. Adeyemi’s performance adds to that effort and helps deepen the emotional side of the story.
As Nigerian filmmakers continue to explore historical narratives, performances such as Adeyemi’s could help make these stories more engaging for audiences at home and abroad. Her work in Osamede further establishes her as an actress capable of bringing nuance and emotional weight to culturally significant roles.
