Police in Osun State have launched an investigation after the body of an unidentified woman was discovered inside a church premises in the Obelewo area of Osogbo with her left wrist reportedly cut off and taken away. Detectives visited the scene following the discovery, which was made on Saturday, according to a statement issued on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, who provided details of the case as part of a broader update on ongoing nationwide police operations.
According to the statement, preliminary investigation indicated that the woman had been killed prior to the discovery of her body, with her left wrist deliberately severed and removed from the scene by persons yet to be identified. Iniedu stated that investigations revealed the deceased had been slaughtered and that her severed wrist was taken away by unknown individuals, though he did not provide further details regarding the exact method or timing of the killing. The circumstances surrounding her death, along with the motive behind the attack and the removal of the severed body part, remain unclear at this stage of the investigation.
Efforts to establish the identity of the woman remain ongoing, as police have not yet been able to determine who she was or where she may have travelled from prior to her death. Her remains were subsequently moved from the church premises to a hospital mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to be carried out to assist investigators in determining the precise cause of death and gathering further evidence related to the case. Authorities have not provided a specific timeline indicating when the results of the autopsy or any additional findings from the investigation will be made available to the public.
The case has since been transferred to the Osun State Police Command’s Criminal Investigation Department, which is now leading efforts to piece together the sequence of events surrounding the woman’s death. Investigators are expected to examine forensic evidence gathered from the scene, alongside any available information that could help identify potential suspects or establish a motive behind the killing. The involvement of the state-level investigative unit indicates that authorities consider the case a priority requiring specialised attention given its unusual and disturbing nature.
Incidents involving the mutilation of victims’ bodies, particularly cases involving the removal of specific body parts, have occurred sporadically in different parts of south-western Nigeria in past years, often triggering public concern and renewed scrutiny of community safety measures. While authorities have not linked this particular case to any similar past incidents, the discovery has nonetheless drawn attention within Osogbo and the wider Osun State community, with residents and local stakeholders expressing concern over the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Police have urged members of the public who may have information that could assist the investigation, including details about the identity of the deceased or any unusual activity observed around the Obelewo area prior to the discovery of her body, to come forward and share such information with investigators. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to conducting a full and thorough investigation into the incident, with further updates expected as forensic and investigative findings become available in the coming days.
