Adeleke’s Wife, Ngozi, Recalls How Governor Danced “From Morning to Morning” at Their Traditional Wedding
Ngozi Adeleke, wife of newly re-elected Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has opened up about her husband’s now famous dancing skills, revealing that his love for dance long predates his political career and dates back to when the couple first met while he was schooling in the United States. Speaking in a recent interview with Vanguard, the governor’s wife offered a personal glimpse into the origins of the energetic dance moves that have since become one of Adeleke’s most recognisable public trademarks, earning him the popular nickname “Dancing Governor” among Nigerians.
According to Ngozi, her husband’s passion for dancing was already well established long before he ventured into politics, explaining that she met him while he was still a student in the United States, during which time his exceptional dancing ability had already earned him the nickname “Jackson” among those who knew him, a reference widely understood to draw comparisons to legendary entertainer Michael Jackson. She noted that this reputation for dance had nothing to do with political showmanship, since he was not involved in politics at the time they met, adding that it was actually his elder brother who was active in politics during that period of their relationship.
Recalling one particularly memorable moment from their relationship, Ngozi described the couple’s traditional wedding ceremony held in her village, revealing that her husband danced from morning until the following morning without stopping. She explained that Adeleke had personally arranged for renowned musician Shina Peters to perform at the event, alongside another musician, transforming what might have otherwise been a conventional traditional wedding into what she described as feeling like a full-scale carnival. According to her, the scale and energy of the celebration left a lasting impression on her community, with residents of her village still referencing the memorable event to this day, describing it as unlike any wedding they had witnessed before or since.
Ngozi’s remarks come at a time when Governor Adeleke’s public displays of dancing have continued to attract significant attention, both from supporters who view his energetic moves as an authentic expression of joy and cultural connection, and from political critics who have argued that such displays are unbecoming of someone occupying the office of state governor. Despite this criticism, Adeleke has consistently defended his dancing as a personal hobby that serves as an outlet for relieving stress, while also framing it as a means of expressing gratitude and praise. He has repeatedly maintained that his enthusiasm for dancing has never interfered with his official responsibilities or his overall performance as governor of Osun State.
Throughout his time in office, Adeleke has made his energetic dance moves a defining feature of his public appearances, frequently using them as a way to connect directly with supporters, traditional communities and residents across the state during campaign events, public functions and cultural gatherings. His wife’s recent comments offer additional insight into how these now widely recognised dance moves have remained a consistent part of his personality throughout their marriage, well before his rise to political prominence and his recent re-election to a second term as governor following the August 15 gubernatorial election in Osun State.
