Davido Says Uncle Adeleke Defeated “17 Governors, 50 Senators” in Osun Election Victory
Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has described his uncle Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election in the Osun State governorship contest as a hard-fought triumph over an overwhelming political coalition assembled against him. Speaking to journalists at his country home on Tuesday following the governor’s victory in the August 15 election, Davido congratulated Adeleke on his re-election, describing the contest as a war rather than a mere battle, and claiming that Adeleke had faced up to 17 governors, 50 senators and members of the House of Representatives, yet still emerged victorious.
Speaking further to newsmen in Osogbo, Davido specified that Adeleke faced 17 All Progressives Congress governors and 50 National Assembly members throughout the electoral contest. He praised the people of Osun State for standing their ground despite what he described as intimidation from the APC, reiterating that the contest amounted to nothing short of a full political war. Davido argued that despite the substantial political strength and resources the APC brought into Osun State, the strategy ultimately failed to sway voters away from Governor Adeleke.
The Afrobeats star did not stop at congratulating the governor, extending his praise directly to the electorate for their resilience throughout the collation process. He commended Osun voters who not only cast their ballots but stood their ground, defending their votes from the polling units all the way through to the local collation centres, and ultimately to the main collation centre, describing the depth of that loyalty as something he could hardly put into words. Davido admitted becoming emotional on election day, saying he was moved by the massive show of support extended to the Adeleke family throughout the process.
Beyond the emotional reflections on the contest itself, Davido attributed his uncle’s victory largely to the support of Osun voters, praising them for standing by the governor and protecting their votes throughout the election. He argued that the outcome should serve as a broader lesson for governors and political leaders across the country, stressing that people ultimately support leaders who deliver on their promises and genuinely work for the communities they represent. He further thanked Osun residents for supporting the Adeleke family despite what he described as deliberate attempts to intimidate voters and influence the election outcome through vote-buying.
Turning to his own role beyond the political sphere, Davido revealed that he intends to now focus more intensively on youth and sports development initiatives across Osun State, explaining that as chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, he had deliberately delayed a number of planned initiatives until after the conclusion of the election. Among the announced plans is a proposed recreation centre featuring football pitches, swimming pools and basketball courts, aimed specifically at nurturing young sporting talent across the state.
Davido’s political involvement in his uncle’s campaign has been consistent and highly visible, having formally joined the Accord Party himself in December 2025, shortly after Governor Adeleke adopted the platform ahead of his re-election bid, following his earlier defection from the Peoples Democratic Party. Adeleke’s victory was formally confirmed after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared him winner of the August 15, 2026 election, having defeated his closest rival, APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji. With the contest now concluded, Davido’s remarks add to the wave of celebratory reactions from public figures closely tied to the Adeleke family following one of the most closely watched state elections of the year.
