Nigerian Universities Global Ranking: UI, UNILAG Lead Full List For 2026
The University of Ibadan (UI) has emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked university in the July 2026 edition of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, with the University of Lagos (UNILAG) following closely behind in second position nationally.
According to the latest ranking data, 32,148 universities and higher education institutions were assessed globally for the July 2026 edition. UI placed 1,291st in the world, securing the top spot among Nigerian institutions, while UNILAG ranked 1,355th globally, placing it second in the country. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) came in third nationally and 1,397th globally. Covenant University, Ota, followed in fourth position nationally and 1,522nd globally, while Landmark University rounded out the top five Nigerian institutions, placing 1,659th worldwide. The University of Ilorin trailed further behind at 1,883rd globally.
The Webometrics ranking, published twice yearly by Spain’s Cybermetrics Lab, assesses higher education institutions worldwide using a set of indicators built around visibility, openness and excellence, factors that broadly reflect an institution’s digital presence, the accessibility of its scholarly resources, and the overall impact of its published research. Despite topping the national table, UI’s global position underscores a persistent challenge for Nigerian higher education, as the July 2026 ranking confirms that the country’s best-performing university still falls outside the global top 1,000 institutions.
The Webometrics results add to a string of similar rankings released over the past year that have consistently placed UI and UNILAG at the top of Nigeria’s higher education hierarchy. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, released in October 2025, UI had already reclaimed its position as Nigeria’s top-ranked institution, placing within the 801-1,000 global band after assessing 2,191 institutions across 115 countries, a feat the university last achieved in 2023. That ranking, based on 18 performance indicators spanning teaching, research, industry engagement and international outlook, also placed UNILAG within the same top band, with Bayero University Kano (BUK) and Covenant University following in third and fourth position nationally. Separately, the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) 2026 Global 2000 list placed UI 1,047th globally, with UNN following as Nigeria’s second-best institution at 1,533rd worldwide.
Globally, the Webometrics rankings continue to be dominated by American institutions, with Harvard University retaining the top position worldwide, ahead of Stanford University, while Oxford placed fourth and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology rounded out the top five. The University of Toronto emerged as the highest-ranked Canadian institution, placing 12th globally, underlining the continued concentration of the world’s leading universities within a small cluster of countries.
Reacting to Nigeria’s recent showing across various global rankings, the Federal Ministry of Education has previously described the performance of Nigerian universities as evidence of the positive impact of ongoing reforms within the sector, citing improvements in research output, innovation, governance, digital transformation and infrastructure across federal institutions in particular. Officials have pointed to the fact that a growing number of Nigerian universities, several dozen in some rankings, now feature among globally assessed institutions as a sign of gradual progress, even as the country’s top universities remain some distance from breaking into the upper echelons of global higher education rankings.
