‘Spider-Man’ and ‘The Odyssey’ Keep Fighting for the Top Spot as ‘Insidious’ Opens Strong in UK-Ireland
Sony’s superhero blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day held onto the No. 1 spot at the UK and Ireland box office for a fourth consecutive week, continuing its extended run at the top of the local chart even as new competition arrived. The film collected £3.6 million ($4.8 million) over the weekend, according to data from Rentrak, pushing its cumulative local gross to $117.9 million.
Right behind it, Universal’s The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan, held firm in second place during its sixth weekend in UK and Ireland cinemas. The film added $3.7 million to cross the $100 million milestone in the region, bringing its local total to $101.4 million, a notable achievement as it continues its extended theatrical run.
Rounding out the top three, horror sequel Insidious: Out of the Further, distributed by Sony, arrived with a strong opening weekend of $2.9 million. Warner Bros.’ The End of Oak Street followed in fourth place in its second weekend, adding $1.2 million for a running total of $6.2 million, while Black Bear’s comedy Spa Weekend completed the top five with an opening haul of $668,191.
Beyond the wide releases, specialised distributor Mubi also posted a standout result with a new title that recorded a Friday-to-Sunday gross of $306,438 and an overall opening haul of $445,317 including previews. Among English-language new releases, the film secured the second-highest screen average of the weekend behind Insidious: Out of the Further, while also achieving the top screen average of any specialised title in the top 15, ahead of A24’s Tony. Notably, the film’s opening weekend alone surpassed the entire lifetime local gross of I Saw the TV Glow.
BFI Southbank served as the film’s top-performing venue for Mubi and marked the cinema’s third-biggest opening of the year, with strong regional showings also reported at Lighthouse Dublin, Glasgow Film Theatre and Watershed Bristol, alongside sold-out screenings at Dukes at Komedia in Brighton. The release also ranked as the third best-performing title across the Picturehouse circuit for the weekend, trailing only The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as Mubi continued rolling the film out across additional markets including North America, Latin America, Italy, Germany and Austria.
The results extend what has been a dominant summer at the UK and Ireland box office for both Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, with the two films continuing to trade places at the top of the local chart for weeks on end even as newer releases jostle for position beneath them.
