Haaland’s Header Extends Manchester City’s Perfect Start With Narrow Win Over Coventry
Erling Haaland’s first-half header proved enough to earn Manchester City a hard-fought 1-0 win over newly promoted Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, extending the club’s perfect start to the Premier League season despite a nervy, far-from-convincing performance.
City started sluggishly, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma almost gifting Coventry an opener when he nearly turned a routine back-pass into a disaster, narrowly clearing the ball just before it crossed the line. Coventry striker Taiwo Awoniyi then spurned a huge chance of his own, failing to beat Donnarumma in a one-on-one, a let-off that appeared to jolt the hosts into life. City gradually took control from there, with Rayan Cherki striking the post before the breakthrough finally arrived in the 26th minute, as a slick move involving deadline-day signing Enzo Fernandez and Antoine Semenyo ended with Haaland guiding a header into the net from Semenyo’s cross.
City pushed to extend their advantage before half-time but could not find a second goal, and thought they had done so shortly after the hour mark when Haaland struck again, only for the effort to be ruled out for Fernandez’s offside position in the build-up. With the score staying at 1-0, Coventry grew increasingly bold and pushed City back for long spells in search of an equaliser, with Donnarumma required to produce a pair of important late saves to deny Loum Tchaouna and Ellis Simms what would have been a historic first Premier League point for the newly promoted club, and their first goal of the season.
The result extended City’s perfect start under new head coach Enzo Maresca to three wins from three matches, moving them top of the table ahead of Arsenal’s fixture against Chelsea the following day. Haaland’s goal also carried personal significance, marking his 300th career goal in all competitions at club level in the top flight, reached in just 368 appearances, and his third goal in as many league games this season. The Norwegian has now scored 20 times in 21 career appearances against newly promoted Premier League opposition, with his sole blank against such sides coming against Sunderland the previous season.
The match also marked competitive debuts for two of City’s headline summer arrivals, Fernandez and Iliman Ndiaye, signings that formed part of a Premier League record outlay of well over £440 million during the transfer window as the club continues reshaping its squad following Pep Guardiola’s decade-long spell in charge. Fernandez, whose £125 million move from Chelsea matched the English transfer record, was a late addition to the starting lineup after Nico O’Reilly was injured during the warm-up, and impressed with a composed full debut, playing a central role in the goal.
Despite the win keeping City’s unbeaten start intact, the narrow scoreline against a side yet to register a point this season underlined how much work remains for Maresca as he continues to integrate his new arrivals, with a testing trip to face local rivals Manchester United looming the following weekend. For Coventry, meanwhile, manager Frank Lampard could still find some encouragement in a performance that pushed City close, even as his side’s wait for a first point and goal since their return to the Premier League after 25 years continued.
