US Midterm Elections 2026: Democrats Win Congress
Voters across the United States went to the polls on November 3, 2026, for the country’s midterm elections, held during President Donald Trump’s second term. The contests determined the makeup of the 120th US Congress, with all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats on the ballot.
The elections were widely viewed as a major test of the Republican administration and its political standing halfway through Trump’s presidential term. According to the Associated Press, Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, delivering a significant setback to Republicans. https://apnews.com/article/ef6199e25927a9ac9f4c18eae0e497cd?utm_source=
All House seats and 35 Senate seats contested
The House of Representatives has 435 voting members, each elected to a two-year term. As a result, every seat in the chamber is contested during presidential and midterm election years.
The Senate operates on a different schedule. Senators serve six-year terms, with roughly one-third of the chamber’s seats contested every two years. In the 2026 election, 33 seats were up for regular election, while two additional seats were contested in special elections, bringing the total to 35.
The outcome of these races determines which party holds the majority in each chamber and shapes Congress’ ability to pass legislation, approve nominations and oversee the federal government.
Democrats secure both chambers
The Associated Press reported that Democrats gained control of both the House and Senate in what it described as a rebuke to Trump and the Republican Party. The party flipped at least seven Senate seats and gained more than two dozen House districts.
The results give Democrats a stronger position to challenge the president’s legislative agenda and scrutinise his administration. A congressional majority also provides the party with greater influence over committee leadership and the direction of legislative investigations.
However, some House races were still being counted after election day. Ballotpedia’s results page reported that dozens of House contests remained uncalled as of November 4, meaning the final seat totals could continue to change as vote counts progress
Midterm elections shape the president’s final years
Midterm elections take place halfway through a president’s four-year term. They are often treated as a referendum on the administration’s performance and can alter the balance of power in Washington.
The US Congress is responsible for passing federal laws, approving government spending and conducting oversight of the executive branch. Control of either chamber can affect how easily a president advances policy priorities.
With Democrats gaining both chambers, Trump is expected to face a more challenging legislative environment during the remaining years of his term. The shift could also influence debates over federal spending, immigration, foreign policy and other national issues.
The newly elected members are expected to take office on January 3, 2027, when the 120th Congress begins. Until then, the outgoing 119th Congress remains in place.
