In the interview shared by Nigerian football journalist Dr Victor Ademola, the young captain explained that the team entered the match determined to secure victory rather than settle for a draw.
Chidi recalls previous defeat to Ghana
Speaking after the match, Chidi said the players were motivated by their previous encounter with Ghana in 2024, when Nigeria lost on penalties.
She described that experience as a major challenge for the team and explained that the players were determined not to repeat the outcome.
The captain said the squad had prepared to win and expressed happiness after achieving its objective.
Her remarks reflected the importance the players attached to the fixture, which remains one of the notable rivalries in West African women’s youth football.
Flamingos secure 4-2 victory
Nigeria produced an attacking performance to defeat Ghana 4-2 in the September 18 encounter in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
The Flamingos took control before half-time, with Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opening the scoring in the 33rd minute. Chidi then extended Nigeria’s advantage during first-half stoppage time.
Ghana returned with renewed determination after the break and reduced the deficit through captain Seidatu Wahab. Nigeria responded through Mary Dunstan, who restored the two-goal advantage in the 70th minute.
Kaosarat Akanji later scored Nigeria’s fourth goal in the 87th minute, while Gloria Ameaa found the net for Ghana in the closing moments.
Despite Ghana’s efforts, Nigeria held on to claim an important 4-2 victory.
Captain’s message attracts attention
Chidi’s post-match comments have generated reactions from football followers who praised the team’s determination and competitive spirit.
Her repeated emphasis that Nigeria came to beat Ghana became a major talking point after the interview circulated online.
The statement also highlighted the motivation young players can draw from previous encounters, especially when facing familiar opponents in regional competitions.
Nigeria’s victory further demonstrated the competitiveness of the rivalry between the two countries in women’s youth football.
Flamingos continue preparations for bigger challenges
The 2026 WAFU B U17 Girls Cup served as an important competition for Nigeria as the team continued its preparations for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The tournament gave the coaching staff an opportunity to assess the players, improve team coordination and test their readiness against regional opponents.
For Chidi and her teammates, the victory over Ghana provided another confidence boost as they continued their development.
The captain’s comments have since added another memorable moment to the Nigeria-Ghana football rivalry, with supporters celebrating the Flamingos’ performance and determination.
