Aiyedatiwa loses appeal on re-election eligibility
The Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal filed by Lucky Aiyedatiwa seeking to stop a legal challenge against his eligibility to contest for re-election.
The ruling means that the suit questioning Aiyedatiwa’s qualification to run again as governor of Ondo State will proceed at the lower court. The appeal had been filed in an attempt to halt the case before it could be fully heard.
The legal challenge was initiated by individuals who argue that there are constitutional issues surrounding Aiyedatiwa’s eligibility to seek another term in office. They asked the court to determine whether he meets the requirements under Nigerian law to participate in the upcoming electoral process.
In its decision, the Court of Appeal ruled that the matter should continue in the appropriate court where the substantive issues raised in the case can be properly examined. The judgment effectively clears the way for further legal proceedings on the dispute.
The development adds another dimension to the political situation in Ondo State, where preparations for the next election cycle are already underway. Legal experts say the final outcome of the case could have implications for the state’s political landscape depending on how the court eventually rules on the eligibility question.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, who assumed office following the passing of former governor Rotimi Akeredolu, has continued to face political and legal scrutiny as he prepares for the possibility of seeking another term in office.
