Akwa Ibom LGA Chairman criticised over security equipment
The Chairman of Essien Udim Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Ntiedo Effiong Usoro, has come under sharp criticism after showcasing what he described as the “necessary equipment” provided to a local security unit to help fight insecurity in the area. Usoro shared photos on social media this week showing himself handing over items meant to support the security team assigned to protect the council secretariat and other government facilities in his domain.
The items he presented which included machetes, torch lights, raincoats, and rain boots quickly attracted public ridicule and anger. Many Nigerians reacted online, questioning how such basic tools could be considered appropriate equipment for a security unit expected to confront armed criminals or respond to serious threats. Critics argued that the gear was inadequate and ill-suited for addressing real security challenges, suggesting it reflected poor judgment and a lack of seriousness about tackling insecurity. Some commentators even questioned whether an elderly security guard pictured with the equipment would be able to defend the community against dangerous, gun-wielding attackers.
Social media users also raised concerns that providing such simplistic resources does not meet the standards of modern security needs, especially in a region where violence, robbery, and criminal activity have been persistent concerns. The backlash underscores growing frustration among citizens who feel that local government leadership should prioritise stronger, more effective security measures to protect residents and deter crime.
