Alibaba explains why he believes in polygamy
He said one of the reasons he supports polygamy is because it can help maintain peace and reduce infidelity in marriage. According to him, when a wife knows that her husband has more than one spouse, she is less likely to misbehave, because she is aware that there are consequences—another person could take her place. He framed this as a deterrent for cheating and a tool for promoting good behaviour among spouses.
Ali Baba also drew from traditional African practices to defend polygamy. He referenced examples from Ibadan where women themselves have encouraged their husbands to take additional wives as a strategy to prevent extramarital affairs. He mentioned customary norms whereby widows with young children are sometimes married into the family of their late husband—such as his brother—so that the children can be kept within the family and remain cared for.
While he acknowledges there are critics who believe polygamy is outdated or difficult in a modern context, Ali Baba insists that in societies where it is handled with fairness, transparency, cultural grounding, and responsibility, it can serve as a stabilising force rather than a source of conflict. He emphasized that consent, balance, and respect are crucial for it to work.
