Amaechi escapes gunmen attack in Rivers
Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi reportedly escaped an attack by gunmen in Rivers State as suspected thugs set ablaze the secretariat of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The incident occurred amid rising political tensions in the state following Amaechi’s recent move to join the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to reports, the attackers stormed the area shortly before the politician’s scheduled appearance, creating panic among party members and supporters.
Eyewitnesses said armed men believed to be political thugs invaded the ADC ward office and set the building on fire, destroying property and party materials. The attack reportedly happened hours before Amaechi’s planned engagement with supporters, raising concerns about political violence in the state.
Amaechi was said to have avoided the attack as security operatives and aides quickly moved him away from the scene. No casualties were immediately confirmed, but the burning of the party secretariat has heightened tensions among political actors and residents in the area.
Supporters of the former minister condemned the incident, describing it as an attempt to intimidate opposition figures. They called on security agencies to investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice.
The development has further intensified the political atmosphere in Rivers State as parties begin early mobilization ahead of the 2027 elections. Observers warn that continued acts of violence could threaten democratic activities if not properly addressed by authorities.
