Anthony Joshua driver jail comment
Boxer Anthony Joshua has reportedly expressed through his family that he would not want his driver to be sent to jail following the recent road accident involving his convoy in Ogun State. The comment was made by Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, who spoke on the matter as legal proceedings commenced against the driver.
According to his uncle, while the family is grateful that the former heavyweight champion survived the incident, they do not believe imprisonment is the best outcome. He explained that accidents can happen anywhere in the world and stressed that their priority is gratitude for life rather than punishment. He added that, on a personal level, the family feels the trial may not be necessary, even though public opinion in the community appears to favour prosecution.
The driver, who was reportedly hired, has been charged with reckless and dangerous driving, as well as driving without a valid licence. Authorities alleged that the vehicle was speeding before it collided with a stationary truck along the highway. The crash resulted in fatalities, which heightened calls from residents and observers for the case to be fully prosecuted.
Anthony Joshua was rescued by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and taken to a private hospital, where he was treated for injuries described as non-life-threatening. He has since been discharged and is said to be recovering. The case has drawn widespread attention, not only because of Joshua’s global boxing profile but also due to the broader concerns around road safety and accountability in Nigeria.
As the matter proceeds in court, Joshua’s family stance highlights the tension between personal forgiveness and the demands of public justice, particularly in cases involving loss of life. Authorities have maintained that due process will be followed regardless of personal opinions expressed by those affected.
