Barcelona Camp Nou tuberculosis case

A worker at the renovation project of Spotify Camp Nou (the home stadium of FC Barcelona) has been diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis, prompting health authorities in Barcelona to launch a contact-tracing investigation.

The Agència de Salut Pública de Barcelona (ASPB) has confirmed that 23 individuals who had prolonged contact with the affected worker are currently being evaluated. At present only one case has been confirmed, so the situation does not yet meet the threshold of an “outbreak.”

The worker in question was promptly removed from the construction site and has begun medical treatment. The construction company responsible for the stadium works, Limak Construction, issued a statement confirming that all relevant health-protocols have been activated, including expert medical follow-up, disinfection of the affected zone, issuing of protective masks, and ongoing hygiene monitoring of air and workspaces.

Barcelona’s stadium redevelopment project has already been under scrutiny for delays and labour issues, and this health alert adds another layer of concern. The timing is notable because FC Barcelona aims to return to the renovated stadium, but its reopening plan may now face increased oversight given the health and safety dimension.

Public health officials emphasise that tuberculosis is a treatable and curable disease, but it requires timely diagnosis, correct treatment, and proper monitoring of close contacts. The ASPB stresses that the current case is not yet a confirmed outbreak and that workers may continue their duties pending the outcome of screening.
