Borno monarch flees to Cameroon after palace attack

A district head in Kirawa, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, Abdulrahman Abubakar, has explained why he fled Nigeria for Cameroon after an attack by Boko Haram destroyed his palace and devastated his community. He said he had no choice but to leave for safety once the insurgents invaded, killed people, burned his residence, and destroyed dozens of homes and even a military barracks.

He described how over 5,000 residents from Gwoza LGA fled across the border toward Cameroon following the raid. Some used trucks, others fled on foot, and many headed toward Maiduguri to escape the danger.

Governor Babagana Zulum had earlier warned about the danger of leaving border communities unprotected, especially with the withdrawal of Cameroonian troops. He said that Kirawa is a border town of strategic importance, and had asked the Nigerian military to ensure its security.
