Crime has drastically reduced in FCT — Nyesom Wike
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that crime rates in the FCT have “drastically reduced” under the current administration. He made the remark during a media parley held on Friday, October 24, 2025, in Abuja.
According to Wike, although isolated incidents of criminal activity still occur, available data show that the overall crime rate has fallen significantly in recent months. He challenged media claims of a spike in insecurity, asking critics to provide supporting statistics before asserting that the situation is worsening.
The FCT administration, through its security services, has attributed the decline to enhanced collaboration with security agencies, improved intelligence gathering, and targeted operations to address kidnappings, one-chance robberies and other criminal acts. For instance, a 2024 report disclosed a major reduction in kidnappings and “one-chance” crimes in the FCT compared to 2023.
Wike also warned against the creation of enclaves or areas in the FCT where law enforcement cannot operate, saying such zones would become “safe havens” for criminality. He directed that every part of the territory should remain accessible to security agencies.
While the minister’s remarks are backed by statements from security officials, they do not provide detailed statistical data publicly. Some residents continue to raise concerns about specific security incidents. Nonetheless, the government’s position is that the trend is positive and that efforts to maintain and further improve security will continue.
