Dan Norris arrested on suspicion of further rape and sexual assault offences
British politician Dan Norris, the independent Member of Parliament for North East Somerset and Hanham, has been arrested on suspicion of further serious sexual offences, including rape, sexual assault, voyeurism and upskirting, police confirmed on Monday. Avon and Somerset Police said the investigation relates to alleged offences involving several women and occurring between the 2000s and the 2020s, and that the matter remains under active police inquiry.
Norris, aged 66, was suspended from the Labour Party in April 2025 after his initial arrest on suspicion of historic child sex offences, alleged rape and child abduction. The party also withdrew the whip from him in the House of Commons at that time. He has continued to serve as an independent MP since his suspension and has not attended Parliament as a member since the first arrest.
In the latest developments, police said Norris was arrested on suspicion of rape against a second woman, sexual assault against a third woman, and a number of offences involving voyeurism and upskirting against several women. Avon and Somerset Police added they are no longer actively investigating the historic child sexual offence allegations, but the original rape and misconduct inquiries remain ongoing.
All alleged offences are non-recent, police said, and the case is complex and sensitive. Norris remains on conditional bail while enquiries continue and victims are being supported as the investigation progresses. The police described the duration and nature of the probe as requiring time due to its sensitive nature.
Norris has issued a statement denying all allegations, saying he “vigorously and entirely denies the serious allegations made against me” and that the claims are “untrue.” He said he is challenging them through his legal representatives.
Dan Norris first entered Parliament in 1997 and served until 2010 before being elected again in 2024, defeating former Conservative cabinet minister Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg. He also served as Mayor of the West of England from 2021 to 2025. He previously stepped down as chairman of the animal welfare charity League Against Cruel Sports following his initial arrest.
