Dangote petitions ICPC over NMDPRA corruption
Africa’s richest businessman, Aliko Dangote, has petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over alleged corruption involving the Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority. The petition is said to centre on claims of abuse of office, regulatory misconduct, and actions that allegedly undermine transparency in the petroleum sector.
Sources familiar with the matter said Dangote raised concerns over decisions and practices by the NMDPRA leadership that he believes are inconsistent with regulatory standards and could negatively affect fair competition and investment in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. The petition reportedly urges the anti-corruption agency to investigate the allegations thoroughly and take appropriate action if wrongdoing is established.
The development has attracted significant attention due to Dangote’s influence in Nigeria’s industrial and energy landscape, especially following recent debates around fuel regulation and operations linked to the Dangote Refinery. Analysts say the move highlights ongoing tensions between private investors and regulatory authorities over policy implementation and oversight in the downstream sector.
As of the time of reporting, the ICPC has not issued a public statement confirming details of the petition, while the NMDPRA is yet to formally respond to the allegations. The situation is expected to fuel further public discussion about accountability, regulatory transparency, and anti-corruption efforts within Nigeria’s energy sector.
