Dele Momodu escapes Benin Republic coup attempt
Media personality and publisher, Dele Momodu, has explained how he narrowly avoided being in Benin Republic during the period of a recent attempted coup, a development he described as both shocking and frightening. He shared the account while reflecting on the timing of his travel plans and how a last-minute change spared him from being caught in the tense situation.
Momodu revealed that he had initially planned to be in Benin Republic around the time the coup attempt occurred. According to him, a sudden adjustment to his schedule prevented the trip, a decision he now considers a life-saving coincidence. He said the news of the attempted takeover broke shortly after, leaving him deeply grateful that he was not within the affected area.
He described the situation in Benin as volatile at the time, with heavy security presence and widespread fear among residents and visitors. Momodu said the experience reminded him of how unpredictable political crises can be and how quickly peace can be disrupted in any country.
The veteran journalist also used the opportunity to reflect on the fragile state of democracy in parts of West Africa. He warned that repeated military interventions across the region pose serious risks to stability, economic growth, and civilian safety.
His account has since drawn reactions from the public, with many expressing relief that he was not caught in the unrest. Others used the moment to call for stronger democratic institutions and regional cooperation to prevent further coups in West Africa.
