Drunk driver dies in lone crash under Alaka bridge Lagos
A tragic road accident has claimed the life of a driver in Lagos after he crashed as he drove alone while under the influence of alcohol.
According to initial reports, the accident occurred at about 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, 25 October 2025, near the Alaka Under Bridge area in the Surulere district of Lagos State. The vehicle involved was a navy-blue Toyota Camry with registration number EKY 311 GK.
The state traffic authority, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), said its newly-deployed 24-hour Night Operations Squad for the Surulere axis responded swiftly to the crash scene, secured the area and contacted the relevant police division. Investigations by the agency and eyewitness accounts indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle while travelling inbound Iponri-ward at high speed. The car somersaulted multiple times before coming to a halt, leaving the driver dead at the scene.
Forensic and scene evidence showed that the driver was intoxicated, which significantly impaired his judgement and reaction time, and was cited as a causative factor in the crash. Following the retrieval of his mobile phone from the wreckage, his family was contacted and the remains were released to them after investigation.
In response to the incident, the LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare‑Oki, expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and described the outcome as a “sobering reminder” of the fatal consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to enforcing road-safety campaigns and encouraged all motorists to drive responsibly, especially during the early “Ember Months” when vehicle movement and risk of crashes tend to increase.
