Enugu hairdresser suicide tragedy
A 22-year-old hairdresser in Enugu, identified as Miss Odama Mary Agado, reportedly died by suicide after discovering that her boyfriend — for whom she had rented an apartment and bought a car — had been unfaithful. According to multiple accounts, Mary ingested a poisonous substance, allegedly “sniper,” after witnessing her partner with another woman in the very apartment she had provided for him.
Sources say that upon learning of the betrayal, Mary left the shared apartment in distress and returned to her own residence. In a phone call to her mother, she allegedly expressed despair, declaring that she “would not live again.” Because her mother lacked airtime, she was unable to call Mary back immediately. Later, Mary was found critically ill and rushed to the hospital, but medical efforts failed to save her life.
Mary was originally from Woleche-Ipuole in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State. She had been gaining success in her hairdressing business, which enabled her to afford a car and provide housing for her boyfriend. Friends and family say she was deeply hurt by the betrayal, and in their grief they suggest that no blame game can restore her life. The family chose not to involve the police, stating their conviction that she acted on her own in ending her life.
This tragic case lays bare the devastating consequences of emotional distress and the weight of unmet expectations in relationships. It also underscores the urgent need for access to mental health support, crisis counseling, and widespread awareness that despair can escalate into fatal decisions. Communities must be vigilant and caring, encouraging open conversations, reaching out to those in emotional pain, and eliminating the shame around seeking help.
