Farouk Lawan presidential pardon new beginning
Former lawmaker Farouk Muhammad Lawan has said that his recent presidential pardon marks a new beginning and signals reconciliation with his life’s destiny. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu granted him clemency along with 174 other individuals, according to a statement issued by the presidential camp.
In his tribute entitled “My Hope Is Renewed, Mr President,” Lawan expressed deep gratitude to Tinubu for the mercy shown. He described the pardon as a divine gesture and portrayed the president as fatherly, compassionate, and decisive. He said the pardon “pulled me back from the harshness of yesterday’s cold” and reaffirmed his faith in the ideals of Nigeria.
Lawan acknowledged that during the darkest phases of his life, his family, friends, and allies stood by him and became guiding beacons. He said he remains indebted to them and promised a renewed dedication to serving the nation.
His statement also emphasized that the pardon was not just a personal redemption, but an opportunity to re-engage with society and public life. He noted that although he had reconciled with his past, the pardon gives him a chance to contribute positively once again.
Lawan’s legal troubles stemmed from a high-profile bribery scandal tied to Nigeria’s fuel subsidy investigations in 2012. He was convicted in 2021 of receiving a $500,000 bribe from businessman Femi Otedola and was initially sentenced to seven years. Subsequent appeals led to a reduction of the term to five years, which he served before his release in October 2024.
Observers note that while the pardon clears the legal barrier for his return to politics, Lawan must also address public perception and rebuild trust. Some analysts say that reclaiming a role in public service will require more than legal relief—it will demand visible efforts at transparency and accountability.
Whether he will seek office again or serve in a new capacity remains to be seen. For now, Lawan sees this moment as a rebirth of hope and purpose.
