FG shuts down 47 Unity Colleges over insecurity
The Federal Government (FG) has ordered the temporary shutdown of 47 Federal Unity Colleges across Nigeria, citing growing security concerns.
According to a circular signed by Binta Abdulkadir, Director of Senior Secondary Education in the Ministry of Education, the closure follows “recent security challenges in some parts of the country” and aims to prevent potential breaches that could endanger students and staff.
The affected schools are spread across several regions of the country, particularly in the North-West, North-East, and North-Central. The Federal Government has instructed all principals of the listed colleges to comply immediately with the closure order.
Education officials say the shutdown will remain in place until security conditions improve and the threat to school communities is significantly reduced.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Education has also stated that the government is “repositioning” unity colleges, aiming to upgrade their facilities, improve teaching quality, and restore the schools’ reputation as national centres of excellence.
