FIRS confirms fire outbreak at Abuja office as probe begins
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has confirmed that a fire outbreak occurred at one of its offices in Abuja on Saturday morning, prompting an immediate response from emergency teams as authorities begin a formal investigation into the cause and impact of the blaze. The incident took place at the FIRS office located at No. 15 Sokode Crescent, Wuse Zone 5, where flames were seen breaking out on the fourth floor of the building, leading to swift action by on-duty security personnel and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service.
In a statement issued by Sikiru Akinola, Technical Assistant on Print Media to the FIRS Executive Chairman, the agency said the fire was quickly noticed by security staff and that emergency responders arrived promptly to contain the situation before it could spread to other parts of the facility. The prompt intervention by the FCT Fire Service and other responders ensured that the fire was brought under control, preventing further escalation and limiting the damage.
FIRS confirmed that no casualties were recorded in the incident and that all staff and occupants were safe following the outbreak, but noted that offices on the affected floor sustained varying degrees of damage due to the fire. Initial assessments indicate that a possible electrical fault may have triggered the blaze, although a comprehensive investigation has now begun to determine the exact cause.
As part of its response, the agency said it is reviewing and strengthening internal safety and fire-prevention protocols to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents in the future. FIRS also expressed appreciation to the emergency services and security personnel whose swift actions helped protect lives and property during the fire outbreak.
