A tragic boat accident in Nafada town, in Gombe State, claimed the lives of five teenagers on Saturday. The deceased include Najib Ibrahim (18), Hauwa’u Dogal (15), Ummati Baraya (16), Umaira Gidado (16), and Amina Jaliya (15).

In a statement issued by his media aide, Governor Inuwa Yahaya expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended his condolences to the bereaved families and the Nafada community. He described the loss as “very tragic and heart-wrenching,” particularly given the young ages of the victims, and he prayed that they find peace and their families resilience.

The governor also used the tragedy to highlight the importance of stricter adherence to water-transport safety standards. He urged local government councils, community leaders, and boat operators to enforce safety protocols and directed the State Emergency Management Agency along with the Nafada Local Government Council to support the affected families. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the accident and review safety measures in riverine communities to prevent similar mishaps in the future.
