Governor Abiodun gifts Super Falcons ₦50m ahead of Benin clash
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced a ₦50 million cash gift for the Nigerian women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, ahead of their critical second-leg match against Benin Republic in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifying tie.
The announcement came when the Falcons visited the governor at his office in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta. The gift is described as a gesture of both encouragement and recognition of the team’s performance.
In the first leg of the tie, Nigeria won 2–0, with goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo. The return match is scheduled to be played at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta. The overall winner across the two legs will advance to the WAFCON 2026 finals, set to be held in Morocco.
Observers view the governor’s financial boost as timely support intended to motivate the squad and galvanize state residents behind the team. With the pressure high, the Falcons will hope the backing translates to strong performances on the pitch.
