Abdullahi Sule, the Governor of Nasarawa State, has charged that some of the individuals who lavishly praised Muhammadu Buhari while he held office turned around and mocked him after he left power.

Speaking at the 2nd Raymond Dokpesi Diamond Lecture organised by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in Abuja, Governor Sule reflected on the dangers of sycophancy in governance. He said that during his time as governor he observed people “sit in the presence of President Buhari and tell him, ‘Oh, you are the best ever. Nobody can do this better.’” Yet he added the moment Buhari left government, “they started saying, ‘Oh, he was one of the worst presidents we had ever seen.’”

He stressed that this behaviour is symptomatic of sycophancy — excessive flattery while in power and abrupt criticism once power is lost. He used the occasion to praise Raymond Dokpesi for courage and innovation in Nigerian media.
