Gunmen attack Benue lawmaker’s convoy, k!ll ex-councillor and injure others

Gunmen have attacked the convoy of a Benue State lawmaker, killing a former councillor and injuring several others in the process. The attack, which occurred along the Makurdi–Gboko road, reportedly happened while the legislator was returning from an official engagement. Witnesses said the armed men ambushed the convoy and opened fire indiscriminately, forcing security escorts to engage them in a fierce gun battle.

During the attack, a former councillor who was traveling with the lawmaker was hit by bullets and d!ed on the spot, while others sustained various degrees of injuries. The lawmaker narrowly escaped the assault as his security team quickly whisked him to safety. Residents of nearby communities said the sound of gunfire caused panic, with many people fleeing into surrounding bushes for safety.

Security operatives later arrived at the scene and evacuated the injured victims to a hospital in Makurdi. The Benue State Police Command has since confirmed the incident, saying investigations have begun to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. The command also pledged to intensify patrols in the area to prevent further attacks.

The killing has sparked outrage among residents and political figures in the state, who described the attack as another reminder of the growing insecurity in Benue and other parts of Nigeria. They urged both federal and state authorities to strengthen security measures and bring those responsible to justice.
