Hisbah arrests 25 over same-sex marriage in Kano
The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested 25 individuals for allegedly planning a same-sex marriage ceremony in the Hotoro area of Kano metropolis.
According to a statement by the board’s deputy commander, Mujahedeen Aminudeen, operatives received a tip-off that some persons were organising the illegal union and proceeded on Saturday night, 25 October 2025, to raid the venue, identified as the Fatima Event Centre along the Hotoro bypass.
At the venue, they reportedly found 18 men and 7 women, including the “groom” who hails from the Sheka district. The suspects were taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing while the board warns that it will not allow events it views as undermining the moral and cultural values of the state.
Under Nigeria’s federal law, the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act 2013 bans same-sex marriage and prescribes penalties for those involved in such unions.
