Immigrant Defense Network constitutional observer training statewide
Across Minnesota and the broader Upper Midwest, a coalition of community groups under the Immigrant Defense Network (IDN) has expanded its efforts to train ordinary residents as constitutional observers to watch and document immigration enforcement activities by federal agents. This initiative has quickly grown statewide, with dozens of training sessions drawing hundreds or even thousands of participants who want to help protect constitutional rights and ensure accountability during enforcement actions.
The recent training sessions are part of IDN’s “Brave of Us” tour, a campaign spanning 30 cities that aims to equip everyday people with the knowledge and tools to safely observe and record interactions involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) without interfering with law enforcement operations. These events have been held in community spaces such as churches and civic halls, where trainers explain the constitutional protections residents have when witnessing enforcement, how to identify legal versus unlawful actions, and how to communicate what they see to legal advocates.
Interest in the training has surged alongside intensified immigration enforcement operations in the region, including significant federal deployments and multiple civilian deaths during enforcement actions in the Twin Cities area earlier this year. Organizers say more people are coming forward to learn how to observe safely and support their neighbours, rather than stay on the sidelines out of fear or uncertainty. The trainings emphasise upholding civil liberties, documenting credible evidence, and connecting observations to legal follow-up, with a focus on non-interference and community solidarity.
IDN’s work reflects a growing grassroots response to expanding immigration enforcement tactics and is rooted in a broader network of community defence and legal advocacy efforts. Organisers say the statewide push not only builds awareness of constitutional rights but also strengthens bonds among diverse groups committed to protecting immigrant communities and ensuring transparency in government actions.
