INEC chairman vows credible 2027 elections
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, has vowed that the commission will deliver credible, transparent, and trustworthy elections in the 2027 general polls. He made the assurance while speaking at a public forum, where he said INEC is already strengthening its systems and processes to restore and deepen public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process. According to him, the commission has learned important lessons from previous elections and is committed to continuous improvement ahead of 2027.
Yakubu explained that preparations for the next general elections are not limited to election year activities but involve long-term planning, reforms, and engagement with stakeholders. He said INEC is focusing on improving voter registration, training electoral officials, and upgrading technology to reduce human errors and electoral malpractice. He added that transparency at every stage of the process remains a top priority, from voter education to result management.
The INEC chairman also stressed the importance of collaboration with security agencies, political parties, civil society groups, and the media. He noted that credible elections are a shared responsibility and urged political actors to play by the rules while encouraging citizens to participate peacefully. Yakubu warned that electoral violence and misinformation threaten democracy and will be addressed firmly through lawful means.
His comments come amid growing public interest in the 2027 elections, with many Nigerians calling for reforms that will ensure their votes truly count. Yakubu reaffirmed that INEC remains independent and committed to the constitution, assuring Nigerians that the commission will not be influenced by political pressure. He expressed confidence that with sustained reforms and cooperation, the 2027 elections will reflect the will of the people.
