INEC mandatory e-register compliance
The Independent National Electoral Commission has insisted that all political parties must comply fully with provisions of the Electoral Act as concerns grow among opposition parties over the introduction of a mandatory electronic register for party members.
The electoral body stated that the electronic register, commonly referred to as the e-register, is part of reforms designed to strengthen transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s electoral process. According to the commission, the new system will help maintain accurate records of party membership and reduce disputes related to party primaries and candidate nominations.
Opposition parties have expressed apprehension about the requirement, arguing that the timeline for implementation may pose logistical challenges. Some party officials believe the move could affect their preparations ahead of future elections, especially as parties continue internal restructuring and membership verification across states.
However, the commission maintained that the electronic register is already backed by provisions in the Electoral Act and therefore cannot be ignored by any political party seeking to participate in elections. The commission stressed that the policy is meant to standardize record-keeping across all political parties and improve the credibility of the electoral process.
The electoral body also emphasized that the system would allow it to properly monitor party activities, particularly during primaries. By maintaining a digital membership database, the commission believes it will be easier to verify legitimate party members and prevent manipulation during candidate selection.
Analysts say the disagreement reflects broader tensions between regulatory oversight and political party autonomy. While some opposition figures worry the policy could create new administrative hurdles, supporters argue that a reliable electronic register could help reduce internal party crises and strengthen democratic institutions.
As preparations gradually begin toward the next election cycle, the commission has reiterated that all parties must align with the law, adding that compliance with the electronic register requirement will remain a key condition for participating in Nigeria’s electoral process.
