Isaac Fayose slams Senate leaders for airport greeting of Seyi Tinubu
Nigerian businessman and social commentator Isaac Fayose has publicly criticised top lawmakers for their conduct at an airport greeting involving Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu. Fayose shared a video on social media showing Seyi Tinubu disembarking from an aircraft as a group of government officials waited at the foot of the plane to greet him. Fayose identified the officials as “Senate leaders” and expressed strong disapproval of their actions, describing the reception as sycophantic and unnecessary. He argued that elected officials should not accord protocol to someone who holds no constitutional office in Nigeria.
In the widely circulated video, Fayose questioned why high-ranking legislators would line up under the sun to welcome Seyi Tinubu, whom he said does not occupy any official position defined by the nation’s constitution. He emphasised that Nigeria is a democratic republic and not a monarchy, and therefore such displays of deference to a president’s child are inappropriate. Fayose acknowledged that he personally holds positive views of Seyi Tinubu’s work in society, but maintained that the behaviour of the Senate leaders was misplaced and distracted from pressing national issues.
Fayose’s remarks have sparked debate across social media platforms, with netizens divided in their responses. Some praised his stance as a call for dignity and restraint in public service, while others questioned his intentions or highlighted the broader context of political allegiance and protocol culture in Nigerian governance. The incident comes amid heightened public interest in the role of political elites and the expectations of decorum among public officials.
